As the leaves turn red, the time is coming fast to store your trailer for the winter. Before you do, it’s important to do full interior and exterior maintenance, a crucial step in preserving the structural integrity of your trailer’s components and avoiding costly repairs in the spring.

Here are a few tips for fall maintenance on ultra-light Prolite trailers.

  1. Clean the interior

To prevent mold from growing inside your trailer, meticulously clean the living space. Vacuum the floors and inside the cupboards to remove every trace of food or dirt. Then wash the floors, the bathroom, the cupboards and inside the fridge with a gentle non-bleach disinfectant and wipe everything carefully. Store cushions inside the house if you can, and clean the surfaces underneath them.

  1. Drain all hoses

When freezing temperatures arrive in the winter, any liquid in your trailer’s tanks and hoses may freeze and cause breakage. That’s why you have to drain all the hoses and tanks. The user’s manual will tell you how to drain the hoses.

  1. Check trailer connections

Examine the trailer connections and make sure that they don’t show any signs of wear. If they do, it’s best to have them repaired at the garage that installed them. Otherwise, clean the electrical connections and protect them with a lubricant such as WD-40.

  1. Lubricate moving parts

Lubricating hinged parts such as feet and doors will keep rust from forming and ensure that everything moves smoothly when the good weather comes back.

  1. Close openings

Check that all openings are closed tight. Make sure that the seals don’t have any signs of being cracked or dried out, and replace them if needed. Then close all the openings – doors, windows, canopy, extension, etc.

  1. Plug in the battery

Disconnect the battery from your trailer and plug it into a smart charger inside your house to make sure that it doesn’t drain completely over the winter. That would reduce its future charging capacity. (Refer to the user’s manual for more details.)

  1. Protect your trailer

Protect your trailer from the weather with a canvas cover designed for RVs.
